With great sadness and sorrow, we write to share our deep concern over the devastating impact of the recent earthquakes that have struck central Myanmar. On March 28, two strong earthquakes, with epicenters near the cities of Mandalay and Sagaing, caused unimaginable tragedy.
While exact figures remain uncertain, the government has today confirmed more than 2,700 people dead, over 4,500 injured, and around 440 missing in central and northwestern Myanmar. The US Geological Survey considers a death toll of over 10,000 people highly possible.
Rescue efforts are severely hampered by collapsed buildings, impassable roads, and downed communication lines.
Amid this devastation, we want to reaffirm our commitment to the local Church, as we have since the onset of the armed conflict that has affected the country for more than four years. The Church in Myanmar faces both natural and human challenges, and we continue to stand by them in this time of need.
As Regina Lynch, Executive President of ACN, expressed:
“Our mission is to be close to the Church in moments of crisis, supporting it not only through prayer but with help to rebuild both structures and lives, not just in the short term but also in the long term. This tragedy is yet another chapter in the terrible pain of this people, and our continued presence with the Church in Myanmar shows that we are not leaving them alone.”
We know that many of you have followed the situation in Myanmar with great concern and share in the grief over the lives lost and the families affected.
Over the years, we have worked together to face the challenges Myanmar has encountered, and we will continue to accompany the local Church in its efforts to heal the souls and rebuild the temple. Should you wish to learn more or feel moved to assist, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to provide further details on how you can continue supporting our family in Myanmar.
Thank you once again for your unwavering support.
With our deepest gratitude
