Since the year 1999 there has been a Carmelite convent in the diocese of Machakos, in southern Kenya, and over the years it has been blessed with numerous vocations. It has 26 sisters today, not only from Kenya but from many other countries, including Spain, Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Tanzania.
The principal vocation of the contemplative religious is prayer. At the same time they strive to support themselves by the work of their own hands, including through the baking of hosts and making liturgical items and vestments. At the same time these activities represent a precious service for the local Church. But this work is never allowed to interrupt their rhythm of daily prayer.
Until recently the host-baking equipment they were using was very antiquated, subject to frequent breakdowns and in constant need of repairs, which made their work difficult and painstaking as a result. At the same time however, the need for hosts has increased, as their Prioress, Sister Mary Therese Ndinda explains: „The experience of the pandemic has led many people to come back to church.“ As a result the Carmelite sisters struggled to cope with the increased demand, and they simply could not afford new equipment, since their earnings barely cover their own very modest needs.
And so they turned to ACN. Thanks to the unfailing generosity of our benefactors, we did not disappoint them but were able to provide the 18,000 Euros they needed to buy the specialised new host-baking equipment they required. This is now up and running, and the sisters are able to produce the hosts far more easily and efficiently.
Sister Mary Therese has written to thank us, on behalf of all her sisters. „We want to express our gratitude for your generous support“, she writes. „May the Lord, who is never outdone in generosity, richly reward you all!“
