Help for the Poor Clares in Malawi: A mission of prayer and work

Help for the Poor Clares in Malawi is currently focused on providing a host baking machine for the contemplative convent in the Archdiocese of Lilongwe. Most altar breads, which become the Body of Christ during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, are manufactured by religious sisters working in prayerful silence. This work represents a vital service to the local church, as every parish needs these hosts for the Holy Eucharist, the source and summit of the Church’s life.

Vital help for the Poor Clares in Malawi

Baking and cutting out hosts requires great care and dexterity, as the slender wafers are extremely fragile. Modern technical equipment is essential because manual work is labor-intensive, making it difficult for the sisters to meet the growing demand of the local Catholic community. Sister Maria Chiara Ng’ambi explains their mission:

“Our way of life is entirely contemplative. We live a life of prayer for the Church and for the whole world, and so contemplation and quiet work are at the very heart of the Gospel. In this way we support ourselves by the work of our hands and entrust our lives to divine providence”.

While the sisters also sew liturgical vestments, host production remains their primary focus as they are required in massive quantities on a daily basis.

Poverty and drought in Lilongwe

The convent’s situation is made more difficult by the national context:

  • Malawi remains one of the poorest nations globally.

  • The community faces constant price increases for essential goods.

  • An ongoing drought led the government to declare a state of emergency in October 2025.

Archbishop George Desmond Tambala supports the project, stating it is «urgently necessary» for the sisters’ support and the sacramental life of the archdiocese. A total of 28,500 Euros has been promised for the specialized equipment.
