Earthquake in Myanmar: Archbishop of Mandalay calls for prayers on first anniversary

The earthquake in Myanmar that struck on March 28, 2025, is recalled by Archbishop Marco Tin Win of Mandalay on the occasion of its first anniversary. In a letter addressed to the benefactors of Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), the prelate reflected on the series of crises his people have endured, including the pandemic, political upheaval, and economic collapse, noting that the Church has remained a pillar of strength through God’s grace.

Resilience after the earthquake in Myanmar

The disaster resulted in destroyed villages and many families losing everything they possessed. While reconstruction efforts are underway, communities remain in a fragile state due to the lack of basic services and ongoing armed conflict

Archbishop Marco Tin Win emphasized the profound impact of the assistance provided by ACN:

“In the midst of this suffering, your generosity has been a powerful sign of hope. Through your support, food, medicine, shelter, and comfort reached many who were injured and displaced. More than material help, your kindness reminded our people that they were not forgotten”.

A journey from suffering toward hope

In communion with the universal Church led by Pope Leo XIV, the archbishop trusts that the nation will one day witness the dawn of peace and renewal. He likened the current hardships of the people of Myanmar to the silence and uncertainty of Holy Week.

“Indeed, we are a Good Friday people, moving through the silence and uncertainty of Holy Saturday, yet trusting that the dawn of Easter will come. The Cross is not the end; it leads to the Resurrection”.

To mark this period, ACN invites its friends to join a day of prayer, penance, and fasting on March 26, as called for by the Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar to pray for peace in the country and the Middle East.
