RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION IN NICARAGUA

The roots of the hostility from the Nicaraguan government, according to the report, lie in the Catholic Church’s support for students during the peaceful demonstrations by Nicaraguans against the corruption and nepotism in the country that began in April 2018. The Church’s temples opened their doors, providing spaces for dialogue and promoting prayer gatherings, but also tending to the wounded and consoling the families of citizens who were killed or kidnapped.

Missionaries of Charity distribute food to the poor of Granada city, Nicaragua.
The Catholic Church in Nicaragua has been suffering the pains and sorrows of persecution. Several Catholic television stations were shut down. 18 Missionaries of Charity of Mother Teresa of Calcutta were expelled from the country. The police prevented Monsignor José Álvarez Lagos, Bishop of Matagalpa, and six more priests from going to the nearby Cathedral to celebrate Mass. The Missionaries of Charity were very active in the country. They used to run a house for abandoned children and abuse victims, a nursing home where the elderly could get amenities, including food and clothing. They also cared for children from low-income families and provided remedial education to at-risk youth.
The Catholic Church in Nicaragua has suffered over 190 attacks and desecrations in less than four years
Join this campaign for Peace in Nicaragua. Offer one or more Masses for the Church in Nicaragua, for its bishops, priests, and religious sisters. The Church cannot stop its activities; many families depend on the merciful works of the Church.
The donation received for the celebration of Masses for Peace in Nicaragua will be forwarded to the Catholic Church in Nicaragua to support priests, religious sisters, missionaries, and pastoral programs affected by religious persecution.
