For the soul of a deceased

What are the Gregorian Masses?

Gregorian Masses” are 30 consecutive Masses offered for the soul of a deceased person. It is a custom that dates back to Pope St. Gregory the Great (590-604), who made it popular thanks to a story referred to in his Dialogues, where he relates that Justus, a deceased monk in the convent of St. Andrew in Rome, for whom St. Gregory had offered Mass for 30 consecutive days, at the end of the thirty days appeared to his brothers in the monastery and announced that he had been freed from the pains of Purgatory. Following this significant fact, the Church has always held this precious spiritual practice in great esteem.

Experiencing the loss of someone we love is deeply sad, but we can bring real comfort to ourselves and the people we love through faith and the gift of prayer.

PRAYING FOR THE DECEASED

Praying for the deceased is a work of charity. We pray, because our prayers are good works that God takes into account so that those who are in purgatory can go, adorned by our acts of love, to meet God in Heaven.

Religious communities and missionary priests ask for “Gregorian Masses”, 30 consecutive Masses offered for the soul of the deceased, for the repose of souls, including those who are forgotten.

St. Faustina Kowalska, in her Diary, tells us that one night a deceased nun appeared to her and revealed to her that she needed prayers to get out of purgatory, which confirms the need of souls before the Eternal Father.

Offering one or more Masses for the soul of a deceased person will be a great act of charity.
