Christians in Iraq: Building a bridge to Jesus

Christians in Iraq have demonstrated to the entire world that God’s love is stronger than hatred, for even amid persecution and violence, His love has not been defeated. Across the country, faith remains resilient and local believers place their steadfast hope in Jesus. Through the dedicated support of Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) benefactors, a vital bridge has been built to pave the way for children to encounter Christ, enabling young children like Rita to draw closer to the Lord and receive their First Communion.

“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them” (Matthew 19:14).

Economic hardship and the future of Christians in Iraq

Despite this spiritual resilience, daily life for the faithful in Iraq remains exceptionally demanding. Severe economic hardship and a widespread lack of employment opportunities are currently among the principal challenges confronting the Christian community, pressures that continue to compel many families to leave their homeland behind.

The local Church recognizes that the future of the Christian presence hinges upon the faith of its children and adolescents. For this reason, pastoral leaders devote special attention to catechesis, youth formation, and sacramental preparation, ensuring that the younger generations build a meaningful and lasting bond with Christ.

Faith formation and First Communion for young generations

This loving support has enabled 360 children like Rita to encounter Jesus through the Eucharist as they receive their First Communion. In addition, assistance has helped the local archdiocese conduct preparation programs for First Communion, while 1,700 children and youth have received structured faith education through archdiocesan catechetical programs.

Through these efforts, young believers receive the precious gift of faith, empowering this young flock to follow the voice of the Good Shepherd, who has called them by name, ensuring ongoing commitment to helping the Church in Iraq nurture its youth in the Christian faith.
